William John Summers joined the faculty in 1984 as a music historian who conducts research on medieval English music, on music in Manila from 1571-1898, and on Spanish music in the American Southwest. In the College Dr. Summers has advised eight Senior Fellows, in the department 14 honors theses, numerous Presidential Scholars, and external music projects such as the recent production of Jesus Christ Superstar. His advisees have received Fulbright and Reynolds Scholarships. They have gone on to prestigious graduate programs at institutions such as the Royal Academy of Music, London, The New England and Cincinnati Conservatories of Music and the University of Michigan. Dr. Summers is the founder and Coordinator of the International Hispanic Music Study Group, and the Editor of this organization's Newsletter. Among his more than eighty publications are the monograph English Fourteenth-Century Polyphony, as well as seventy-five articles and reviews that have appeared in Early Music History, The Journal of Musicology, Music and Letters, Revista de Musicologia, and New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians.
