FUND-RAISER/AUCTION

On November 15, the Men's and Women's teams held the 3rd Annual Fall Fundraising Pro-Am. Twenty-four Dartmouth Tennis enthusiasts were paired with team members for a great day of tennis. In conjunction with the Pro-Am, the first Big Green Tennis auction offered more than twenty items up for bid. Not surprisingly, the most popular item was a day in Women's practice. The tennis programs thank all those who donated items and participated in the auction.

FRIENDS OF TENNIS DONATIONS

The Dartmouth men's and women's tennis teams are coming off a very successful fall season and are looking forward to a great spring. We are really pleased that the hard work of our players and the generous contributions of our supporters have helped us to establish Dartmouth as one of the top teams in the Northeast. By stepping up our recruiting efforts, we are now laying the groundwork to move the teams up to the next level--becoming perennial contenders for the Ivy League title and earning bids to the NCAA Team Championships. In order to keep improving the program and building on our success, we need your help.
Our goal this year is to raise $40,000, which we will use in four major areas:
On behalf of both teams, we're asking you to be as generous as possible in making a contribution to the Dartmouth tennis program. These hard-working players greatly deserve and will be extremely grateful for your support.

DARTMOUTH TENNIS REUNION

On May 15-16, 2004, in conjunction with Sarita Yardi's and Allison Taff's induction into the Wearers of the Green, the men's and women's tennis teams will host a tennis team reunion at Dartmouth. Please be sure to save the dates! There will be lots of excellent tennis on Saturday, followed by a dinner that evening. On Sunday we will get together again in the morning for more tennis. This will be a great opportunity to see old friends, get acquainted with other alums, and meet the current teams. For further information or to RSVP, please contact Chuck Kinyon at chuck.kinyon@dartmouth.edu or Bob Dallis at robert.dallis@dartmouth.edu.
Also, if you have any photos from your days as a Dartmouth tennis player, please send them in for inclusion in a reunion video we'll be producing. The mailing address is: Dartmouth Tennis, 6083 Alumni Gym, Hanover, NH 03755

TEAM NOTES
The Big Green came back two weeks prior to the beginning of classes to get ready for the challenging fall schedule. Five seniors, several juniors and sophomores, and five new faces marked the team landscape. The class of 2007 is: Mark Brodie-Greensboro, NC, Travis Maiers-Atlanta, GA, Steve McGaughey-Des Moines, IA, Eli Samaha-Tampa, FL, and Dave Waslen-Calgary, Canada

FALL RESULTS
Following a two-week pre-season prior to the start of classes, the Green were eager to begin the fall schedule.
Five teams competed in the 1st annual Volkl Shoot-out at Dartmouth from Sept. 19-21: Army, Buffalo, Colgate, Dartmouth Green, and Dartmouth White. Each Dartmouth player played three singles and three doubles matches.

Playing in the top spot for Darmouth Green Team, Neal Bobba went 2-1 with a significant win over Colgate nemesis Reed Hagmann. Neal and Drew Dinkmeyer once again teamed up to go 2-1 losing only to a tough Army duo. The Dartmouth White team's depth came through as they dominated the event, winning 77% of their matches.
The first weekend back after the start of classes the Green made their traditional trek to New Haven to test themselves against Ivy rivals Columbia, Cornell, and Yale. This year's event was dampened by rain on the second day, which significantly shortened the weekend play. Travis Maiers '07 was the most successful Dartmouth player, losing in the finals of the "D" flight, while the Bobba/Dinkmeyer combo was stopped in the finals of the "A" doubles competition.
Once again, the team traveled to the National Tennis Center in New York City in early October for one of the best events of the year--the ECAC Conference Championship. This tournament brings together the top 16 teams in the East. Seeded No. 8, Dartmouth got out of the gate early by sweeping Penn in doubles only to come up short in singles, winning only at No. 1 (Neal Bobba) and No. 3 (Drew Dinkmeyer). A frustrated Green team almost ran the table in the back draw, sweeping all the doubles and dropping only one singles match. Round 1: Dartmouth 3 Penn 4, Round 2: Dartmouth 7 Marist 0, Round 3: Dartmouth 6 Rutgers 1.

WOMEN'S WRAP-UP

FALL RESULTS

With the return of last year's starting singles line-up and the addition of two talented freshmen, the Dartmouth women's tennis team looks to build upon the gains they made in 2003 under second year head coach Bob Dallis. Led by senior co-captains Arden Fredeking and Catherine Crandall, the Big Green will be striving to move into the top half of the Ivy League after finishing seventh last year. Working with Dallis is new assistant coach Jesse Medvene-Collins, a 2002 graduate of the University of Redlands (California), where he was a four-time, first team All-Conference selection and participated in four NCAA Division III National Championships.
"The Dartmouth women's tennis team is the hardest working team I've ever coached," said Dallis, who is in his 17th season as a Division I college tennis coach. "We improved a tremendous amount last year, and with continued hard work and improvement, there's no reason why we can't make bigger inroads in the league this year."
The women's tennis team opened the 2003-2004 season on September 19-21 with an excellent showing at the Volkl Shoot-out at Dartmouth. The Big Green competed in a round-robin format against Boston University, Brown, Colgate, and the University of Connecticut. Dartmouth ended the weekend with a 25-12 record; 18-7 in singles and 7-5 in doubles.

Dartmouth was led by freshman Lindsay Winingham who was a combined 8-0 in singles and doubles, playing at No. 2 and No. 3 singles and at No. 2 doubles with Ann Scott. Also impressive were sophomore Ann Scott who went 6-0 for the weekend and freshman Kerry Snow who was 3-0 in singles.
The highlight of the weekend was a 3-0 doubles sweep against Boston University, which reversed Dartmouth's spring results against the Terriers. Dartmouth also had a notable singles outing against Brown, winning three of five matches. Co-captain Catherine Crandall won in straight sets at No. 1, Winingham won handily at No. 3 singles, and senior Kelsey Surbaugh won a third set
super-breaker at No. 5 singles.
The Dartmouth women's tennis team dominated the Quinnipiac Invitational from September 26-28, reaching the final of five of six singles and doubles flights and going 19-3 overall. Unfortunately, the finals were rained out. Junior Sarah McNally lost just one set en route to the "A" flight singles final, where she would have squared off against Seton Hall's top player, who stopped senior co-captain Catherine Crandall in a tight semifinal match. Freshman Lindsay Winingham was edged in the semis of the "B" flight, dropping a third set super-breaker to her UMBC opponent, while sophomore Katie Jaxheimer and freshman teammate Kerry Snow were slated to meet in the "C" flight singles final.

Building on their excellent doubles showing at the Volkl Shoot-out, the Big Green placed teams in the finals of every doubles flight. Jaxheimer and Crandall led the way in the "A" flight, defeating the top-seeded team from UMBC 8-1 and then returning to the court five minutes later to down Stony Brook's top team 8-2. Sophomore Ann Scott and Winingham improved to 6-0 on the year, beating UMBC's No. 2 team 9-7 and UConn 8-0 in the "B" flight. In the "C" flight, McNally and Snow teamed up to pound Seton Hall 8-1 and Stony Brook 8-2 en route to the final.
Sarah McNally and Kerry Snow reached the final of the "B" doubles flight, Katie Jaxheimer reached the semifinal round of the "C" singles flight, and Lindsay Winingham and Janis Hui reached the quarterfinals of the "A" doubles flight at the inaugural Women's College Tennis Invitational at the National Tennis Center in New York City from October 11-13.
As tournament director Bill Mountford made the trophy presentation following the conclusion of the doubles tournament, his comments summed up how far Dartmouth women's tennis has come under second year head coach Bob Dallis. "We've had some great tennis here today, with four powerhouse schools in the two finals: Kentucky, Kansas, Michigan and Dartmouth!"

Freshman Snow and McNally, a junior, stunned the field as they toppled teams from Penn State and Columbia before upending the third-seeded team from Michigan, Elizabeth Exon and Chrissie Nolan, 8-6 in the quarters. They then stopped a duo from UPenn in the semis, before falling to the tough Michigan tandem of Kim Plaushines and Debra Streifler 8-3 in the final. Sophomore Katie Jaxheimer downed players from Rutgers and the University of Washington and then in the quarters stopped Lucia Aniello of Columbia, who had upended the #6 seed. Jaxheimer fell in the semis to UPenn's Raluca Ciochina, the tournament's eventual winner. Senior Hui and freshman Winingham, who had never played together prior to this event, downed a team from Army and then stopped Boston College's Allison Ashley and Emily Yemans, who had toppled the tournament's second seed. Hui and Winingham were then stopped in the quarters by Harvard's Melissa Anderson and Preethi Mukundan 8-3.
