Saturday, October 19 in Bethel, Maine, Big Adventure Center hosted an American Bouldering Series competition. Seven Dartmouth students competed.
Each climber had three hours to climb. Beginner climbers and intermediate climbers were to gather as many points as possible by climbing as many routes as possible. Advanced climbers were placed in the finals based only on the points from their six hardest climbs.
Cate Birtley '06 and Laura Case '06 both competed in the women's beginner category. Cate placed fourth, and said, "I hate rock climbing! Everybody's so mean to me, and I wish I could just go home." Laura finished in second place, and was quoted, "There's a really good foot out right, if you just move your body over a little. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's it. Yeah. Yeah."
Kelly Sheridan '05 finished first in the men's intermediate category. Ethan Richards '02 took second in the same. Both sustained numerous bite injuries. The resuslts from rabies tests are expected early next week.
Gabriel Martinez '74 and Ben Miller '82 entered men's open category. Gabe entered the finals in third place, and Ben entered finals in fourth place. Both finished as they entered. Another Dartmouth graduate, Ben Fuller took, second place.
Christine Balaz '04 entered the finals in second place. Then, the competetors took her out behind the building and fed her a club sandwich, two chicken breasts, a pear, and a nalgene of water. "We believe in nossing, Lebowski," they said. She finished in fourth place.
