Edmund S. Muskie was elected to the Maine House of Representative for three terms, Governor of Maine for two terms, and served as U.S. Senator for 22 years. In 1968 he was the Democratic nominee for Vice President and in 1980 was sworn in as the 58th Secretary of State. In 1986 Mr. Muskie was appointed by President Reagan to the three-member Tower Commission to investigate the role of the NSC in the Iran/Contra affair.
