David Mathews is a former U.S. Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare 1975-77. He served as President of the University of Alabama 1969-75 and 1977-80. In 1981 he left the university to join the Kettering Foundation. He has published numerous scholarly books and articles on public policy and education and the American South.
