Joan Didion, novelist, essayist, and screenwriter, has observed the country's cultural and political landscape with what John Leonard called "her sonar ear, her radar eye" for the last four and a half decades. Author of five novels and eight books of nonfiction, she won the National Book Award for The Year of Magical Thinking in 2005, a poignant memoir of her grief following the sudden death of her husband, the writer John Gregory Dunne.
