Skinny as a whippet and fierce as a snapping turtle, Matthew McConaughey brings a jolt of unpredictable energy in his portrayal of Texas rodeo-rider Ron Woodruff, whose free-wheeling life was overturned in 1985 when he was diagnosed as HIV-positive. Ron takes his treatment into his own hands, and with the help of a kind doctor (Jennifer Garner) and his transgender business partner (Jared Leto) helps others with the disease obtain life-saving—but illegal medication.
