Restor'd. Lana Cable asserts that Milton presents divorce as comprising "a true doctrine, a right discipline, and original perfection and correct practice which has fallen into abuse." The purpose of this divorce tract is to 'restore' that doctrine and discipline "to its original, unfallen state" (Cable 144).

second time revis'd. The Doctrine and Discipline of Divorce first appeared in August 1643, unlicensed and without Milton's name. There is some reason to believe that Milton attempted to have it licensed but failed. The second edition appeared in February 1644 in a much expanded form, still unlicensed, and with Milton's initials on the title page.
