Dartmouth 1 - Cornell 3

Friday, November 20, 1998

Attendance: 3,824

Officials: Dan Murphy (R), Bill Jones, Paul Jones

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Just eight seconds into the game, the Dartmouth College men's hockey team got a taste of what they were in for on Friday night at Lynah Rink on the campus of Cornell University.

Jamie Herrington fired a backhand shot at Big Red goaltender Ian Burt and the sophomore netminder got just enough of his right leg on it to deflect it off the post and wide of the goal.

Burt went on to make 35 saves as Cornell defeated the Big Green, 3-1 in front of a sellout crowd of 3,824. Cornell improved to 4-0 (3-0 ECAC) while Dartmouth fell to 2-2 (1-2 ECAC).

With the game knotted, 1-1, Cornell's David Hovey netted his second goal of the game and the eventual gamewinner on the power play. Dartmouth goaltender Eric Almon (31 saves) made two stops without a stick before Hovey fired it into an open net at the 3:44 mark of the third period. Kyle Knopp and Ryan Moynihan assisted on the goal.

The Big Red upped its lead to 3-1 when Dan Svoboda fired a shot the beat Almon high on the glove side. The goal was assisted by Danny Powell and Brian McMeekin. The Big Green had just killed off its fifth power play of the game.

The Big Green evened the score at 1-1 when Curtis Wilgosh potted his third goal of the season. Wilgosh hammered home a Ryan Poulton rebound while Cornell's Jeff Oates served his hooking penalty. The power play goal was also assisted by freshman Mike Maturo.

Dartmouth had dominated the second period, outshooting the Big Red, 13-6. The Big Green's best chances came shorthanded. With freshman Dan Casella in the box for slashing, Ryan Chaytors was stopped by Burt on a two-on-one with Jamie Herrington and on the same kill, Wilgosh was stoned by Burt on a two-on-one chance with Chris Baldwin.

Cornell opened the games scoring at the 9:06 mark of the first period on Hovey's first goal. The Big Red caught a Dartmouth defenseman pinching and headed down the ice on a three-on-one. Hovey snapped a shot over Almon's glove hand. Mike Rutter and David Kozier assisted on the goal.

Dartmouth's best scoring chance in the first came while shorthanded. Chaytors - who already has two points a man down - broke in alone on Burt, who made a diving stick save.
