HANOVER, N.H. -- Senior defenseman Ryan Poulton registered a hat trick as the Dartmouth College men's hockey team defeated Union, 5-1, in ECAC action Saturday night from Thompson Arena.
It was the first collegiate hat trick for Poulton and the first by a Big Green player since Scott Peach netted three goals at Brown last January.
Poulton got Dartmouth (2-1, 1-1 ECAC) going early on, scoring twice in the first seven minutes of the game to give the Big Green a lead it would not relinquish. Union (1-5, 0-2 ECAC) would answer once when Joel Bond found the net at the 7:55 mark, but the Dutchmen would not find the net again.
Dartmouth added insurance in the second period when freshman Mike Maturo scored his second goal in as many nights, and then Poulton finished off the hat trick when his slapper trickled between the pads of Union goalie Leeor Shtrom.
Jamie Herrington closed out the scoring, netting a shorthanded attempt over the right shoulder of Brandon Snee. Snee had replaced Shtrom after Poulton's third goal.
Ryan Chaytors added two assists to the Big Green attack while Eric Almon turned aside 19 of 20 shots to collect the win. For Union, Shtrom and Snee combined for 25 saves.
