At Dartmouth: Ness returns for a fifth-year after missing his entire junior season due to a broken hand. His experience will be an invaluable asset to the Big Green coaching staff this season. Ness was a tri-captain last year and is expected to provide solid leadership to a squad that welcomes 12 new faces. Not known for his offensive prowess, Ness collected a career-high four assists. In Dartmouth's 5-2 victory at St. Lawrence, he posted yet another career-best, notching three assists. Possibly the team's top defensive player, he appeared in all 30 games as a sophomore. He tallied two assists, but his presence in the defensive zone has always been his strong suit. As a freshman in 1994-95, Ness broke into the lineup in the second game of the season and played in 24 contests, collecting one assist.

High School/Juniors: Ness played his junior hockey with the Penticton Panthers where he played with Dartmouth graduates David Whitworth '98 and Shaun Peet '98. He was captain of the Athol Murroy College of Notre Dame squad that won the league championship in 1991-92. Ness was awarded the team's most improved player in 1993-94.

Personal: Shane's favorite NHL player is the New York Rangers' Wayne Gretzky, whom he once met. Shane lists the film Goodfellas and the music group Tragically Hip as his favorites.
