Brown 4 - Dartmouth 2

Friday, March 6, 1998

Attendance: 2,207

Officials: John Murphy (R), Michael St. Louis, Tim Crowley

Like it has happened so many times during the 1997-98 season, it seemed like Dartmouth was the better hockey team for at least 50 out of 60 minutes against Brown on Friday night. But Dartmouth sleepwalked through a disastrous stretch of the second period during which the Bears scored three times in 3:22. And that was all Brown would need to hold on for the 4-2 win.

Dartmouth was flying high after a shorthanded goal from Sturgis 11:49 into the first period, but the Bears struck in the second in rapid succession.

Winger Tyler Garrow blasted a shot from the slot past Dartmouth's Eric Almon '00 to make it 1-1, and then Brown capitalized on a poor Dartmouth defensive play, as Brent Hoiness quickly chipped a pass from behind the net in front to Jade Kersey, who shelfed it high over Almon for a 2-1 Brown lead.

And little over two minutes later, Garrow scored his third goal of the year -- and second of the period -- taking a bad Dartmouth giveaway in the neutral zone, swooping in, and again beating Almon high to the glove side, to make it a 3-1 Brown lead.

Dartmouth pulled to within 3-2 at 15:55 of the second on a blast from the right point by Dave Risk '99 that found its way past a screened Brown goalie Scott Stirling, but the damage had already been done.

Despite peppering Stirling with 11 shots in the third period, the Green could not score again. And Damian Prescott put the icing on the cake for the Bears with 3:50 left in regulation, finishing off a pretty two-on-one to make it 4-2 Brown.

The turn of events left the Green wondering why they again outshot and generally outplayed an opponent, yet again ended up on the short side of the decision.

Head Coach Bob Gaudet said, "I thought we played hard, I thought we played well … [but] there were mistakes … and we just didn't capitalize. That was the difference."
