PRINCETON, N.J. -- Perhaps it was because they were physically exhausted after Friday's war with Yale or maybe it was because they took Princeton a little too lightly, but for whatever reason, the Big Green definitely looked a step slow on Saturday afternoon at Princeton's Hobey Baker Rink.

Much of what had been present during the Yale game -- crisp passing, tight defense, winning the little battles -- had evaporated during Saturday's contest against Princeton, and three second-period mistakes proved too much for Dartmouth to overcome, and the Green lost to the Tigers 5-3.

With the score tied at 1-1 heading into the second period, the Tigers scored three times in the middle stanza to build a lead that would in the end prove insurmountable.

Scott Bertoli put Princeton up 2-1 at 1:54 of the second, taking a feed on the left side from linemate Casson Masters and beating Wong from the left of the slot. At 8:20 of the second period, Norwich, Vt. native Steve Shirreffs made it 3-1, scoring on a powerplay slapper from the top of the slot near the blueline that beat a screened Wong under the crossbar.

Defenseman Chris Barber made it 4-1 at 13:54 of the second, pinching in from the point and ripping a slapper past Wong.

The Green pulled to within 4-2 at 16:21 of the second on a goal from Sturgis, but Princeton tightened up their defense in the third period and Dartmouth could pull no closer.

Desperate for offense, Head Coach Bob Gaudet pulled Wong in favor of an extra forward with over two minutes left in regulation, but Princeton's Matt Brush made Dartmouth pay with an empty-net goal with 1:13 to play in the third.

The Green got a goal from Michael Byrne '01 with 38 seconds left off a mad scramble in front to pull within 5-3, but there simply was not enough time to get any closer.

Not even a penalty on Princeton goalie Erasmo Saltarelli -- who inexplicably attacked Brian Fleming '98 after Byrne's goal -- could help the Big Green. Dartmouth tried to pull Wong again and set things up on the powerplay, but time simply ran out.

Benoit Morin had put Princeton on top 1-0 early in the first, before Jeremiah Buckley '98 evened things at 1-1 a few minutes later, pushing the puck past Saltarelli following a huge pileup in front. Ryan Chaytors '99 and Zach Hafer '99 assisted on Buckley's goal.
