CANTON, N.Y. -- The Big Green played a nice three periods of hockey Friday night at Appleton Arena and defeated the Saints 5-2. The Green jumped on top 3-0 by the middle of the second period and cruised from there.

Mike Byrne '01 got things going at 18:02 of the first period, taking a pass from Ness and putting it on net. SLU's Eric Heffler kicked aside Byrne's first shot, but the freshman got his own rebound in front and buried it for his fourth goal of the season, giving the Green a 1-0 lead.

Dave Whitworth '98 made it 2-0 at 3:45 of the second stanza, and again Ness was the catalyst. Ness held in a clearing attempt at the left point and took a low shot on net. Whitworth was camped out in perfect position in front of the net and deflected the shot past Heffler.

Ness again took a shot on net a couple of minutes later from the left point. This time the puck deflected in front and came to Tom Ruzzo '97 near the right faceoff circle. Heffler wasn't banking on the change of direction in front and was way out of position, so Ruzzo had a wide open net in which to shoot the puck, which he did, at 6:53 of the second period.

SLU finally got on the board at 14:53 of the second, as an attempt by Scott Peach '99 to dump the puck around the boards behind the Dartmouth net inadvertently deflected in front to Bob Prier, who beat Eric Almon '00 to the short side to make it 3-1 Dartmouth.

But powerplay goals in the third period by Jeremiah Buckley '98 and Jon Sturgis '98 gave the Green a dominating 5-1 lead, and an inconsequential goal by Mike Gellard at 10:54 of the final period closed out the scoring at 5-2.

Almon again was sharp in net, stopping 27 of the 29 shots he faced. Heffler made 22 saves for the Saints before he was relieved late by Sean Coakley, who made six saves.

The win was the third straight for the Green on the road, and their third straight ECAC win as well.
