WEST POINT, N.Y. - There were no tricks for the Dartmouth men's hockey team Friday night as the Big Green gave new coach Bob Gaudet a treat with a 7-1 victory over Army in the season-opener.

The game was scoreless for most of the first period before Dartmouth tallied a pair of goals less than two minutes apart. Senior Jon Sturgis gave the Green a 1-0 lead on a shorthanded goal with 1:54 left in the period, and the Big Green improved it to 2-0 on a Shaun Peet shot with seven seconds remaining.

Bob Cancelli, Curtis Wilgosh and Charlie Retter all scored in the second period, sandwiching Army's only goal of the night by Jason Choi. That got the Black Knights within two at 3-1, with 11:46 to go in the period, before Wilgosh and Retter gave Dartmouth a comfortable 5-1 lead after two.

Sturgis notched his second of the night midway through the third period, and Michael Byrne, a freshman center, tallied his first collegiate goal with 5:49 to play.

Sophomore goalie Eric Almon went the distance for Dartmouth with 35 saves. Army's Daryl Chamberlain stopped 17 shots in two periods before Corey Winer made nine in the third stanza.

Wilgosh had an assist to go along with his goal, while Matt Giedt had a pair of assists.

Army's record went to 2-2 while Dartmouth, 1-0, opens ECAC play next weekend, traveling to Rensselaer and Union.
