Brent Retter

Brent Retter (Captain)

At Dartmouth: Recognized by his teammates for his intense play at both ends of the ice, Brent will serve the Big Green as the captain this season. He appeared in 28 games last season, totalling 13 points on five goals and eight assists. Brent's two goals against Harvard on March 1 helped Dartmouth to a 5-1 win and a season sweep of the Crimson for the first time in 16 years. He is best known for his powerful skating, and his bruising style of play that made him one of the more intimidating players in the league. His sophomore year, Brent skated in 26 games, tallying four goals and two assists. That season followed a freshman campaign that saw Brent get off to a hot start, scoring five goals in his first six games. For the year he notched seven goals and seven assists for 14 points ¯þgood enough to finish eighth in scoring on the squad. He has had two two-goal games in his career, the first coming against Vermont during his rookie season and the second in the Harvard game last year.

High School: Brent played hockey and lacrosse at Upper Canada College and played his junior hockey with the North York Raiders. He led Upper Canada to the Ontario gold medal in 1992 and was the team's leading scorer.

Personal: Brent once skated with Alexei Yashin of the NHL's Ottawa Senators, and was most impressed with the on-ice skills that Yashin displayed. Brent's most memorable moment came when he scored his first collegiate goal in a game against Colgate. He "put the biscuit in the basket" for the first time while his parents were in the crowd at Thompson Arena. Brent would like to continue playing hockey for as long as possible before going into business for himself.

Brent Retter on Dartmouth

"Upon my recruiting trip to Dartmouth, I was immediately impressed not only by the beautiful campus, but also by the well-rounded atmosphere surrounding the campus and the students here. It was my first visit to an Ivy League school, and I expected to find the student body to be the stereotypical `all work and no play.' My observations proved quite the contrary, though. While being very intelligent and academically oriented, everyone seemed to be athletic, playing one sport or another, and very outgoing socially. I made up my mind that first night here that I wanted to be a part of the diverse Dartmouth community.

Coming in as a freshman, I was very excited to become a part of a team that was on the rise. While the team has not been extremely satisfied with the progress made since then, all but three players return this year, and every one of the Big Green players knows that we have what it takes to be one of the top teams in the ECAC. This whole squad is a harder working and more skilled bunch than teams in years past. We will prove to be a dominating force in the 1996-97 season as Dartmouth returns to the past tradition of hockey excellence."
