PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Dartmouth men's hockey team closed out the 1996-97 season with an 8-6 loss at Brown Saturday night. The loss was the fourth in five games for the Big Green, which closed out the season with a 10-17-2 record (5-14-2 ECAC). The first period set the tone for the game, as seven goals were scored. The Bears took a 2-0 lead after just 2:32 on tallies by Damian Prescott and Paul Giblin, but Dartmouth stormed back for three unanswered goals. Jon Sturgis notched two of them, at 5:55 and 15:38, sandwiching them around a power-play effort by Alex Dumas. Brown responded with another pair, though, to take a 4-3 lead after one. Scott Bradford tied the game at the 17:07 mark, and 1:50 later Robert Merrill gave the Bears a lead. Dartmouth started strong in the second period, as Sturgis completed a hat trick just 34 seconds in. Jeremiah Buckley then scored on the power play at the 6:01 mark, before Brown regained the lead with two more goals to close out the scoring in the period. Prescott netted a power-play goal at the 10:10 mark, and Merrill potted his second of the night two minutes later. The Bears opened the lead up to 7-5 at the 13:40 mark of the third period when Marty Clapton scored his first of the game. Dartmouth made things interesting, cutting the lead in half on a goal by Buckley with 41 seconds to play and then emptying the net. The strategy backfired, though, as Giblin scored an empty-net goal with seven seconds remaining to clinch the win for Brown, which finished last in the ECAC with a 4-16-2 record. The game was a physical affair, as exactly 100 penalty minutes were called including 67 on Brown. Jason Wong played the first period in the goal and had eight saves before he was replaced by Eric Almon. He finished with 18 saves. For Brown, Brian Audette had 39 stops to get the win.
