Press Release: The Dartmouth men's hockey team was rolling in 1996

NEW HAVEN, CONN. -- If dogs are a man's best friend, then Dartmouth was its own worst enemy Friday night at Yale.

The Big Green spotted the Bulldogs a 5-1 lead before its spirited comeback fell just short, allowing Yale to escape with a 5-4 victory at Ingalls Rink.

With the win, the Bulldogs snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 5-8-2 overall, 4-7-1 in the ECAC. Dartmouth (8-6, 3-5) has now lost three of its last four contests.

Trailing, 5-3, in the third period, junior Jon Sturgis netted the second of his two goals for the night to pull Dartmouth within one with 4:46 left in regulation. But Yale goalie Dan Choquette held tough in the end, making several of his 31 saves to preserve the Bulldog victory.

Yale got on the board first, as sophomore Keith McCullough scored the first of his two goals on a power play 4:17 into the first period.

The Big Green was quick to answer with a power-play goal of its own just 58 seconds later. Sturgis deflected a shot by senior Owen Hughes past Choquette to knot the game, 1-1.

But the game began to slip away from Dartmouth after the first intermission. Yale came out of the locker room and scored two goals in the first 2:14 of the second period to take a 4-1 lead. Bulldog junior Matt Cumming then netted a short-handed goal 12 minutes later to build the seemingly comfortable, 5-1 cushion for Yale.

Senior Bill Kelleher, playing in his 100th collegiate game, tallied a goal and two assists, as did junior David Whitworth.

Dartmouth goalie Jason Wong, who made 15 saves before being pulled after two periods, lost for the first time in a game that he started. Freshman Eric Almon made six saves for Dartmouth in the final stanza.

Yale, which came into the game ninth in the league on the power play, converted on three of seven opportunities.
