At Dartmouth: A gritty and capable offensive-minded defenseman, Owen followed up his strong rookie season with another fine campaign. Switching from forward to defense, he didn't miss a beat, netting six goals and passing out 13 assists. His four power play goals were third on the team. Owen's sixth goal of the season came in a 7-3 victory over RPI, the first of three consecutive wins. Although he moved up to forward on occasion last season, Owen returns as one of the team's strongest defenders in 1995-96. In an impressive freshman season, Owen scored three goals and handed out 16 assists, second-most on the team. His total of 19 points was fourth on the Big Green scoring list. Owen played in all 27 games and earned the Booma Award as Dartmouth's rookie of the year. His first collegiate goal came at Clarkson and was part of a four-goal comeback as Dartmouth turned a 5-1 deficit into a 5-5 tie. The next night, Owen dished out two assists in a loss at St. Lawrence.
High School: Owen lettered six times in hockey at Milton Academy and also served as team captain. He also won letters in lacrosse and golf. Owen was an All-America selection in lacrosse and both a league and New England all-star in hockey.
Personal: After graduation, Owen wants to live in Europe and possibly pursue a hockey career. His father, Owen Sr., played hockey at Boston College. The junior Hughes is partial to seafood, especially shrimp and clams. His favorite movie is The Graduate, and his favorite television show is Cheers. Owen says St. Lawrence is the toughest place to play "because of the small ice surface."
