The University of Illinois-Chicago outslugged the Dartmouth Big Green 8-6 in a non-conference contest tonight at the UIC Pavilion.

It sounded like Dartmouth goalie Scott Baker and UIC netminders Paul Spencer and Adam Lord did not play as badly as the high number of goals indicated. There were a lot of defensive giveaways in this one, and some sloppy defensive play that left the goalies holding the bag.

After a period in which Dartmouth jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead and generally dominated play for most of the period, UIC scored 2 goals to even the score at 2-2 at the end of the first. The Dartmouth goals were scored by Brent Retter, and Curtis Wilgosh. Wilgosh, a freshman, scored his first collegiate goal in his first-ever college game.

In the second, a Bill Kelleher Dartmouth score was quickly matched by a bizarre UIC goal, in which the puck ended up under a Big Green defender who lay inside the net.

Another tally by the Flames was soon matched by a Dartmouth goal by Darren Wercinski. Wercinski found himself with the puck in front of the net on a 3 on 0 Dartmouth rush because of a UIC defensive breakdown.

In the third, Jon Sturgis broke the 4-4 tie, scoring the Big Green's fifth goal of the night less than a minute into the period. This led to the hooking of Spencer, the starting goalie, and his subsequent replacement by Adam Lord, who played well last night in a 3-3 tie between Dartmouth and UIC. The move seemed to work, lighting a spark under the UIC squad. UIC scored a powerplay goal to tie it 5-5, then added another score a little while later to go up 6-5. UIC's Kevin O'Keefe scored again a bit later to give the Flames a 7-5 lead, but just when it appeared UIC was really wresting the momentum from Dartmouth, Wercinski beat Lord for his second goal of the night, and cut the lead to 7-6. UIC tried to just hang on for the last few minutes of the game, protecting their one goal lead. Dartmouth came tantalizingly close to tying the game with about 3 minutes left, but Charlie Retter's rip clanged off the goalpost. Finally, with just over a minute left, UIC's Al Dunbar scored a goal off a rebound that extended the lead to 8-6, and dealt a deathblow to any Dartmouth chances of winning the game.

I was not at this game, since I couldn't get out to Chicago, so my comments are based on the UIC radio feed. I'll reserve any analysis of the game and how the teams looked for someone who was at the game. A gentleman last nite from UIC who was at last nite's game posted some good analysis of the contest, so I will again defer to him for further analysis of tonight's game.

Comments:
These are a supplement to the analysis made by Jeffrey M. Beyer of Dartmouth College earlier tonight.

This was a very different game than last night. UIC came out fired up, as is evidenced by their penalty at :16 into the game. Dartmouth was also much more agressive than they were last night, but it is clearly not their normal style of play. It was nice to see Paul Spencer in goal for UIC. Most of the goals that he gave up tonight were related more to defensive breakdowns and less to goalie error (as mentioned by Jeff). Coach Pedrie replaced Spencer with Adam Lord :53 into the third period after Spencer let in his 5th goal (again defensive breakdown - big time).

Coach Pedrie played with his lines again tonight. He sat senior, Trevor Mathias and junior, Shaun Summerville. Instead he played senior, Matt Brenner and junior, Ryan Walls (first game of the season). Both played very well. Freshman, Chuck Mindel both scored and assisted tonight, thus extending his scoring streak to 6 games and giving him 8 points on the season.

P.S. to Jeff: it wasn't a gentleman who wrote last night's analysis, it was his sister, Laeh, who plays for the Chicago Ice hockey team and who used to be a trainer for the UIC Flames.
