At Dartmouth: Van Abel emerged as one of the top defensive players on the Dartmouth team and was awarded the Booma Award, given to the top freshman performer. He played in all situations and finished the season with two points (1g, 1a) and 12 penalty minutes. Van Abel scored his first career goal in a win against Colgate (1/12) and he assisted on a Michael Byrne ’01 goal in the loss against Northeastern (12/9).

High School/Juniors: Van Abel was a teammate with Jason Costa on the NAHL’s Danville Wings that won the championship in 2000. Van Abel had eight points (2g, 6a) last year in 34 games. The stay-at-home blueliner was a NAHL All-Star game participant that was held in Chicago, Ill.

Personal: Van Abel is an outdoorsman away from the rink, enjoying fishing, hunting, camping and canoeing. Van Abel cheers for the Detroit Red Wings and names 2001 Norris Trophy winner Niklas Lidstrom as his favorite player to watch. Van Abel lists Tombstone as his top movie and listens to Metallica.
