HANOVER, N.H. - It was one of those nights when little went right for the Dartmouth men's hockey team.

Despite outshooting visiting Princeton 40-20 before 2,250 fans at Thompson Arena, the Big Green couldn't solve sophomore goalie Nate Nomeland. Nomeland, making just his second appearance of the season, stopped a perfect 40 of 40 shots to lead the Tigers to a 6-0 win.

The first period was particularly damning for Dartmouth. The Big Green outshot the Tigers 12-6 in the period, including 10-1 in the first 16:15, but surrendered three goals on five shots in the last 3:45 en route to the deflating loss.

Dartmouth now has a three-game losing streak and is 1-5 (1-3 ECAC). Princeton, meanwhile, improves to 2-1-3 (1-1-2).

"We didn't play our best game tonight, especially in the first two periods," said Nomeland, who notched his first career shutout. "I faced a lot of shots, but I wouldn't want the reverse tonight, that's for sure.

"It was kind of a sloppy win for us, but we'll take it."

After skating to a competitive 5-4 loss against 15th-ranked Yale Friday night, Dartmouth had little success against Princeton, partly due to goaltending problems.

Freshman Darren Gastrock worked the first period and stopped only three of six shots. Sophomore Nick Boucher was inserted for the final 40 minutes and surrendered three goals on 14 shots.

Equally troubling, the offense was ominously quiet, getting shutout for the first time since the season opener and finishing 0-for-8 on the power play. With a full week off, Dartmouth hopes to get is act together before hosting nationally ranked Maine next Saturday night.

"It's a long season," assistant coach Dave Peters said. "We're playing well in certain parts of the games, but we're just coming up short.

"I thought we outplayed Princeton early in the game, but we fell behind and then we started pressing. We tried to do too much in certain areas, and then it got away from us."

After Dartmouth controlled most of the first period, the visitors rallied in the final 3:45.

Defenseman Steve Slaton opened the scoring, beating Gastrock with a beautiful wrap-around effort for the first of his career and the eventual game-winner.

Less than two minutes later, junior Brad Parsons got into the act, taking a pass from linemate Kirk Lamb and lining a shot through Gastrock's legs. With 25 seconds left in the period, senior Chris Corrinet made it 3-0, flushing a rebound for his fourth of the season.

The Big Green switched goalies for the middle frame, but it didn't help much. Princeton increased its advantage to 4-0 early in the period, as senior Ethan Doyle broke free from the blueline and beat Boucher with a wrister from the slot.

All told, Dartmouth outshot Princeton 17-8 in the period, but Nomeland's strong play preserved the shutout.

Princeton added a pair of third-period goals to set the final margin, as David Del Monte connected for his first of the season before Corrinet tallied his second of the game late in regulation. Nomeland made 11 saves in the third period.

"Nomeland played well," Peters said. "He's a big goaltender. He kept them in the game when we were taking a lot of shots. I thought we outplayed them, but hopefully these things will even out over the course of the season."

Big Green Notes: The second line had a decidedly different look than it did Friday night. Jamie Herrington remained at center, but sophomore Chris Hontvet came in to play left wing and junior Gary Hunter was the right wing. Hontvet made his first appearance since the season opener at Western Michigan, while Hunter dressed for the first time since the Big Green played at Princeton Feb. 20, 2000. The pair replaced Ryan Sinclair and Jason Costa in the lineup. ... Princeton now has six-game unbeaten streak (4-0-2) at Thompson Arena. ... By goal differential, this is Dartmouth's most lopsided loss since a 7-1 defeat at Maine on Dec. 18, 1998. This is Dartmouth's worst shutout since a 9-0 blanking at Princeton early in the 1990
