CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Dartmouth men's hockey coach Bob Gaudet, ever confident about his team's chances this season, knows there will be some difficult times along the way.

Take Saturday night, for example. The Big Green could get very little done against Harvard at Bright Hockey Center, succumbing to the Crimson's quick and aggressive attack in losing 5-2.

Dartmouth's power play finished the night 0-for-3 and the weekend 0-for-6, but the Big Green (1-3-0, 1-1-0 ECAC) still came home from the league-opening road trip with two points, having beaten Brown 4-3 in overtime Friday night.

"We're getting there. I think we have the makings of a very good hockey team," Gaudet said. "We just have a couple of inconsistencies that we have to take of, but I think we're on the right track."

Dartmouth's best stretch of the weekend came in the first period against Brown, when the team was confident and able to dominate the Bears physically.

Saturday night, there were few such good moments, as the youthful Harvard team dominated most of the physical battles and opened the floodgates with three goals in the second period. Freshman Rob Fried led the Crimson (2-1-0, 2-1-0) with two goals, while goaltender Oliver Jonas made 34 saves.

"We had a tough game last night, but I thought our guys came back and played hard tonight," Gaudet said. "The second period obviously hurt us, but this is a good Harvard team in their own building. They played very well."

The teams skated to an entertaining first period that saw Dartmouth outshoot Harvard 13-8 but the Crimson take a 1-0 lead.

That goal came off the stick of senior center Harry Schwefel late in the period. Schwefel, accepting a pass from right winger Kyle Clark, took advantage of traffic in front of the net to dump a 10-foot wrister past goaltender Nick Boucher (30 saves).

Harvard extended its lead to 2-0 five minutes into the middle frame when junior defenseman Peter Capouch netted his first of the year. Capouch's tally was a solo effort - a line-drive blast from the left point that somehow managed to elude Boucher.

The Crimson wasn't done. Three minutes later, freshman Rob Fried chipped in the first of his career, taking a pass from fellow rookie Tyler Kolarik and directing it between the pipes.

Late in the period, the Big Green finally awoke. Dartmouth peppered Jonas with several shots, finally breaking the shutout when junior tri-captain Jamie Herrington banged home a rebound for his first of the year. Mike Turner and Michael Byrne earned assists on the play.

But Harvard responded soon after, making good on its fifth power play when Fried beat Boucher for his second of the day, giving the Crimson a 4-1 lead at the second intermission.

The teams traded goals in the third period, as Dartmouth's Mike Maturo responded to a Tim Pettit netter with one of his own, spelling his second goal in as many games.

The Big Green opens the home portion of its schedule next Friday night with a league game against Yale.

Big Green Notes: Junior Ryan Sinclair made his first appearance since the season opener last weekend against Western Michigan. Sinclair, who replaced an ill Chris Taliercio in the lineup, had five goals and 15 points in 28 games last season. ... Former Big Green players Shane Ness, Chris Showalter and Brian Fleming were part of the large Dartmouth contingent in attendance. ... Jamie Herrington's goal was his first of the season. Herrington, who had a hat trick in an exhibition game two weeks ago, had four goals and 13 points last year. ... Mike Maturo's goal came with teams at 4-on-4, giving Dartmouth a minus-three ratio (1GF, 4GA) in such situations. Maturo last had goals in consecutive games last Feb. 27 and March 3, when he connected against Cornell and Clarkson. ... Dartmouth now has lost five in a row at Bright Hockey Center.
