MDFPR's osteopathic internship year became accredited by the American Osteopathic Association in 1994. A full time osteopathic physician joined the faculty in 1999. The addition of doctors of osteopathy (D.O.s) has meant a growing appreciation by allopathic faculty and residents of the neuromuscular system's important role in disease and preventive medicine. This results in a strong commitment to osteopathic medicine including a close association with the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine-based faculty and area D.O.s who provide lectures, workshops and precepting to both osteopathic and allopathic residents. In addition, residents are independently active in teaching each other various approaches to osteopathic diagnosis and treatment of common medical problems. We recognize the common ground shared by osteopathic and allopathic family medicine, particularly stressing the importance of a holistic approach to health care.
