Our MCB students come to the program from diverse backgrounds and experiences, providing a wonderful mix of cultures from many regions of this country and from around the world.
One of the benefits of attending Dartmouth is the chance to enjoy the quality of life afforded by living in the upper valley region of the Connecticut River. A vibrant cultural life is anchored by the many events at Dartmouth’s Hopkins Center, and extended with considerable off-campus offerings of movies, theater and music, museums, and excellent bookstores. Extensive athletic facilities and a wide range of dining and entertainment options are associated with the College community.
Excellent hiking and mountaineering opportunities exist in the nearby White Mountains of New Hampshire and the Green Mountains of Vermont. Both mountain ranges are traversed by the Appalachian Trail which passes through Hanover. Outstanding river and lake canoeing are available. The ocean beaches of New Hampshire and Maine are about two and one-half hours away while Lake Champlain in Vermont is one and one-half hours to the northwest. It is truly a beautiful place to live, while still maintaining proximity to larger metropolitan areas.
The seasonal changes in Northern New England are spectacular; in particular, early October attracts many visitors who come to view the colorful autumn foliage. In winter, recreational opportunities are also abundant with alpine skiing at the College-owned Dartmouth Skiway, 12 miles north of Hanover. Many larger ski areas such as Killington and Stowe are within easy driving distance. Cross country skiing (even from the door of any academic building) provides a relaxing lunch time break from research during the winter as do running and biking during the other three seasons.
Finally, when the urge to spend a weekend in a "big city" arises, Boston, Montreal and New York can be reached by car in 2, 3, and 5 hours respectively.
