Oligonucleotide Synthesis
The MB&P Core instruments, ABI 394 and 392, are capable of performing a variety of specialized syntheses. We routinely make dye-labeled oligonucleotides, including FRET probes, biotinylated oligonucleotides, thiolated and long (<50bases) oligonucleotides etc. We are able to perform quality control on these oligonucleotides using MALDI MS. The synthesis of ordinary primers and probes has long ago moved to “oligo houses.” It is far cheaper to order PCR and sequencing primers etc. out of house. We will continue to support the laboratories that order these primers from us. However, the real cost savings to laboratories is in ordering “boutique” oligonucleotides from us as they are much cheaper when synthesized in-house at cost.
