|
(Teresa Ralli / Miguel Rubio, Yuyachkani)

| Plot: | In pre-Inca times, northern Peru was inhabited by one of the most beautiful and violent civilizations--the Moches. As a homage to their deity, they conducted a violent ritual in which they decapitated their victims and removed the eyes. Years late a wave of similar crimes are unveiled in a small town of Palle, once the hub of Moche culture. Percy, a shy insecure and nonviolent cop is assigned to head up the investigation. During his search he meets a Spanish pathologist, with whom he falls in love and a professor whose specialty is Moche culture. More than a detective story it is about how one man-s uncontrollable passion gets under his skin.

| Plot: | Based on the alleged autobiography of gay Peruvian talk show host Jaime Bayly, this is the story of Joaquin, a troubled youth from a well-to-do family in Peru, who must overcome the domineering influences of his macho, racist father and obsessively religious mother to discover his true sexual nature.
Attractive, intelligent and well-off, Joaquin has everything going for him, except that he is both Peruvian and gay, a very uneasy combination. Fighting against his true sexuality under the watchful eyes of his overprotective mother and domineering father, Joaquin decides to leave home to straighten himself out. He succeeds in dating a girl for a while, but soon finds his latent desires reemerging when he starts falling for a male friend. Finally forced to question rather than suppress his sexuality, Joaquin realises he is at odds with the conventions of Peruvian society and must reject the path mapped out for him by his parents. The novel on which the film is based (a best- seller written by talk-show host Jaime Bayly) is an insider-s tale of sexual hypocrisy in Lima-s upper class. By changing milieu director Francisco J. Lombardi loses none of his bite. At home, the new film is a runaway success, perhaps forbearing the first to tackle - with unflinching frankness and candor - a subject that remains taboo for many in Latin society.

Set in an almost deserted Andean village, the play is a stark three-way conflict in a ghostly church between the three remaining residents. Armando and Bernardina are desperate to resume a long-lapsed annual religious procession for the Apostle Santiago. Rufio, who holds the key to where the effigy of Santiago resides disagrees, he resents the apostle's conquistador associations and instead holds his allegiance to the Andean god Yllapa. Underneath this story is one of pain and loss, hinting at conflicts both new and old, ethnic and political. It is a religious metaphor for the political situation surrounding Peru's truth and reconciliation hearings after 20 years of civil war in which grave human rights violations and abuses were committed by both the state and the armed opposition.
