| | Notes: | Originally released as a motion picture in 1987.
| | Plot: | This is the story of two upper-class brothers, Javier and Darfo, who participate in the struggle to overthrow Machado during his dictatorship in the 1930s. Dario is a revolutionary true to his ideals, while Javier is a social climber and opportunist. Javier charts his way to the top through alliances with dictators and politicians, becoming a government informer, and eventually a Congressman during the Batista regime. He causes his brother-s murder and his mother-s subsequent suicide. The film traces twentieth-century Cuban history until 1959 through the life of Javier, exploring the trajectory of a political and economic class that benefitted from Cuba-s neocolonial relationship with the U.S. With the revolution, this class of individuals would lose their privileged position as the masses became the foundation of the new society. Leading themes in the film include the accommodation of the Cuban elite and the Catholic church to the dictatorial governments in Cuba before 1959, and the achievement of success through betrayal. The film points out the U.S. influence on Cuban internal politics, as well as the corruption that was part of the system. (From Lava database)

Originally issued as a motion picture in 1968. Credits Scenography, Pedro García Espinosa ; photography, Jorge Herrera ; music, Leo Brouwer.
Performer Raquel Revuelta, Eslinda Nuñez, Adela Legra, Eduardo Moure, Ramon Brito, Adolfo Llaurado.
| | Plot: | Lucia is an anthology film, three separate stories related by the common theme of women in revolution. It tells the stories of three Lucias, one in 1895, when the Cubans fought for independence from the Spaniards (a situation that resolved with U.S. intervention and purchase of Cuba from Spain); in 1933, when Cuban popular resistance against the dictator Geraldo Machado resulted in failure; and 1960 in the aftermath of the victory of the revolution led by Fidel Castro. They are women from three different classes; the first is upper class, the second is from the middle class, the third is working class. They have three different ranges of potential action, and responses. Each story is hung on a love drama. In the first, the woman has an affair with a Spanish soldier, in which she must betray her own family. In the second, a young woman abandons her family and class to go underground with her soon to be slain husband; in the third, a young wife learns how to read and write and work in collective agriculture, in spite of a traditionally macho husband who tries to keep her in the house. The events of each life portrayed focus around issues of politics, feminism and gender battles. Solas, the director, explains, that he made women the protagonists because `women are traditionally the number one victims in all social confrontations. The woman-s role always lays bare the contradictions of a period and makes them explicit.-... Lucia was extremely well received in Cuba, won many international awards, and is now an international classic.- (Aufderheide)

| | Plot: | This satirical critique of bureaucracy during the early period of the Cuban Revolution follows the efforts of a woman who tries to collect her dead husband-s pension. The husband, who worked in a factory that made plaster busts of revolutionary heros, invented a machine which increased productivity, churning out thousands of busts per hour. He unfortunately got caught in the machine and met an untimely end. Singing his praises at his funeral, his friends decide to bury him with his identification card, as a tribute to his true proletarian heroism. After his burial, when his wife tries to collect his pension, she is told it is impossible without the identity card. Aided by her nephew, a dutiful socialist youth, she wanders through a labyrinth of brain-dead bureaucracy. The nephew is forced to exhume his uncle-s corpse to retrieve the card. Endless lines to obtain signatures and mountainous government forms attended by bored, unthinking employees utterly frustrate attempts to rebury the deceased proletarian. Finally, the nephew is carted away in a straitjacket after strangling the cemetery administrator.

| | Plot: | The recreation of events in Havana, February 1958, when a young combat soldier in opposition to the Batista tyrrany, kidnaps the Argentine racecar driver Juan Manuel Fangio

| | Plot: | A young girl successfully predicts strange events much to everyone-s surprise. She possesses this unique gift her entire life. This is the recreation of a real life case of extrasensory perception that caught doctors and psychologists off guard
The film is based on a real life story. It depicts Amanda, a simple and popular figure who since childhood has the gift of seeing the present, the past, and future of people she knows and others she has never seen before. Her gift provokes the interest, but also the fear of psychologists, journalists, friends, and relatives. All are amazed by Amanda-s exceptional paranormal experiences. These experiences are considered normal within the Caribbean religious environment, but would be seen as an example of magic realism from outside the area.

| | Plot: | Four stories show the rise of the Communist revolution in Cuba, Battista-s Havana and the poverty and oppression of the Cuban people. A series of vignettes illustrates the extremes of wealth and poverty, the exploitation, and the passions that led to the Cuban Revolution. A co-production between Cuba and the Soviet Union, I Am Cuba is a wildly schizophrenic celebration of Communist kitsch, mixing Slavic solemnity with Latin sensuality. Kalatozov-s astonishingly acrobatic camera takes the viewer on a rapturous roller coaster ride of the sensuous decadence of Fulgencio Batista-s Havana and the grinding poverty and oppression of the Cuban people. The film languished for three decades in a Russian archive before being re- discovered.

The film languished for three decades in a Russian archive before being rediscovered.

| | Plot: | Rarely seen and vital for anyone interested in the history of Cuban cinema, this silent feature was directed by Ramon Peon, who made at least 70 films in Cuba and Mexico from 1920 to 1960. The story concerns the rivalry between two men--one honest, one corrupt--vying to marry a wealthy rancher's daughter. When all seems lost for the honest man, he prays to the Virgin Mary for help. Some sources list this as the last silent feature produced in Cuba.
