| Plot: | A Spanish/Mexican co-production, Aro Tolbukhin En La Mente Del Asesino (In the Mind of a Killer) is a semi-documentary about the life of serial killer Aro Tolbukhin. Interviews and reenactments tell the story of a Hungarian man who was sentenced to death before a firing squad in Guatemala. He grew up in Budapest with his twin sister Stella and fled to join the merchant marines during the Russian invasion of 1956. After he was arrested for burning seven people alive in 1981, he confessed to nearly 20 other murders during the Guatemala Civil War. Commentary is provided by Carmen Beato, a former nun who lived with Tolbukhin in Alta Verapaz. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide

| Plot: | In typical Luis Buñuel fashion, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie surrealistically skewers the conventions of society. Buñuel applies his surrealist touch to a mundane event: a dinner party that may never come to pass. A group of well-to-do friends attempt to gather for a social evening, but are thwarted at every turn. The initial problem seems to be a simple scheduling mistake, but the obstacles become more and more bizarre. At one point, the guests are interrupted at the table by an army on maneuvers. Later they learn that they are merely characters in a stage play and so cannot have dinner together. These misadventures are combined with symbolic dreams of the various characters, some of which also involve interrupted dinners. Wicked social satire and one of Buñuel-s funniest films. ~ John Voorhees, All Movie Guide

| Plot: | Documentary on the life of photographer Francisco Boix (b. 1920 in Barcelona; d. 1951 in Paris). During the Spanish Civil War, the exile found was sent, along with 7,000 other Spaniards, to the Mauthausen concentration camp. While incarcerated, he took over 2,000 clandestine photographs. After liberation, he took some of these photographs to the Nuremberg Trials in accusatory testimony against several important military leaders of the Third Reich.

|
| Plot: | An epic detective story that offers a gripping expose on why the world is so unequal. Professor Jared Diamond traveled the globe for over 30 years trying to answer this question. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book. Why did Eurasians conquer, displace, or decimate Native Americans, Australians, and Africans, instead of the reverse? Diamond dismantles racially based theories of human history by revealing the environmental factors actually responsible for history's broadest patterns.
The first episode, "Out of Eden," proposes that a society's potential for advanced development was not determined by race or creed, or by time and experience, but by access to domesticated animals and cultivated plants. Part two, "Conquest," explores the impact of weapons and disease in shaping the conquest of the New World.
The final episode, "Into the Tropics," examines the development and colonization of Africa by South Africans and Europeans, and explains why geography is still a factor in forming the divide between those with money and resources and those without.

Álvaro del Amo
|
| Format: | 1 videodisc (110 min.) ; sd., b&w ; 4 3/4 in. DVD (Region 2. PAL) |
| Imprint: | Madrid: 2004 |
| Language: | Spanish with English and French subtitles.
|
European superpowers: Real Madrid in the 1950's, the Dutch and Germans of the 1970's, Liverpool in the 1980's and Milan and the French national teams of the 1990's--all teams that have changed soccer history.

The dark side: This episode draws together events and stories that have made headline news: tragedies that have brought communities together, a war sparked by a match, and hooliganism that has threatened the very existence of the game.
Special features: Highlights from the 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972, 1976 European Championship Finals; Hillsborough remembered; Heysel remembered; Trouble on the Terrace; Biographies

The media: First newspaper reports of soccer relied on pigeon-post delivering updates from the soccer field to newspaper offices. By the 1990's, television was fueling the growing wealth of the game and this program looks at how the media's role has changed over the past century.
Special features: Extended interview with Pele, Maradona, Paolo Rossi, Dino Zoff, Jurgen Klinsmann, George Best, Ronaldo, Kenny Dalglish, Alan Shearer and Zico; Highlights from the 1998 World Cup Final; Biographies.

From colonial intervention, poverty and segregation to independence and dictatorship, this program measures Africa's huge potential against its continued failure to succeed at an international level. A game for all: Away from the stadiums, players and fans, this episode follows the battle for the soul of soccer as it becomes an increasingly global game.
Special features: The story of the African Nations Cup from 1957-2000; The golden era of the World Club Championship, 1960-1970; Biographies

(52 min.)
This program employs dramatizations, maps, art, and architecture to follow the ongoing struggles between Christians and Moors--and among the Christians themselves--during the years 1213 through 1347 as the Christian reconquista changed into a Crusade. It also contrasts these clashes of arms with the cultural revival among Christians, Muslims, and Jews in the Iberian melting pot.
Capítulo 9. La época de las calamidades, S. XIV-1479. (53 min.)
"This program delves into a period of violence and catastrophe in Spanish history as civil war, ongoing campaigns against the Moors, the Black Death, and economic and agricultural crises ravaged the Iberian peninsula."
Disc 6:
Capítulo 10. Los Reyes Católicos, 1479-1516. (52 min.)
The union of Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon, two able rulers known jointly as the Catholic Monarchs, set the stage for the unification of Spain religiously as well as politically and economically. This program utilizes dramatizations, location footage of historical landmarks, and maps to illustrate their consolidation of power, including the final conquest of Granada, the expulsion of the Jews, and the establishment of the Inquisition in Spain."

(53 min.)
"A child of Belgium, a speaker of French, and a Habsburg on his father's side, there was little Spanish about Charles V, yet Spain was the core of his kingdom. This program follows the cosmopolitan "Carlos Quinto," King of Spain and Holy Roman Emperor, through two coronations, a wedding, wars with France and the Ottoman Empire, the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation, and his retirement to the Monastery of Yuste."
Disc 8:
(54 min.)
Philip II ruled over Spain at its peak of world influence ... and at the start of its long slide from prominence. This program depicts the life and times of this absolutist monarch through dramatizations, artwork, and maps. High-profile topics, including the Inquisition, the Armada, and the Battle of Lepanto, are presented while addressing controversies such as the imprisonment and death of the king's heir, Don Carlos."
Capítulo 14. La decadencia política del Siglo de Oro, 1598-1652. (46 min.)
Spain's Golden Age is recognized as the most fertile and glorious era in Spanish arts and letters. Miguel de Cervantes, Francisco de Quevedo, Calderón de la Barca, Diego Velázquez, and many others created works of enduring renown...even as their country fell into ruin. This program contrasts the marvels of the Siglo de Oro through dramatizations, film clips, artwork, and visits to important locales with the ineffectiveness of Kings Philip III and IV--a long period of rule that was largely characterized by political and military decay and disaster.
Disc 9:
(47 min.)
"Charles II was the last of the Spanish Habsburgs. This program follows the continuing decline of Spanish influence during Charles the Bewitched's life--and the War of the Spanish Succession that broke out upon his death. The Peace of Utrecht, which marked the triumph of balance of power over hereditary rights of rule, is addressed as well. Dramatizations, artwork, and visits to important locales bring this period to life.
Capítulo 16. La nueva España de Felipe V, 1714-1789. (53 min.)
"Under Philip V, Spain at last began to recover from the long stagnation it had suffered during the twilight of the Habsburg dynasty. Employing dramatizations and maps, this program charts the reign of the first Bourbon king of Spain and the geopolitical forces that shaped the Europe of the Enlightenment--most notably the Spanish and Austrian wars of succession and their treaties."
Capítulo 17. Carlos III, luces y sombras del reformismo ilustrado, 1746-1789. (49 min.)
Told in flashback during the final days of Charles III's life, this program scrutinizes that enlightened monarch's reign, a period of moderate reformism that required balancing innovation with the heavy weight of tradition. Successful domestic initiatives such as the renovation of Madrid, controversial incidents including the reform riot of 1766 and the expulsion of the Jesuits, and disastrous foreign policy decisions that drew Spain into the Seven Years' War and the American Revolution are each looked at in their turn."
Disc 10:
Capítulo 18. A la sombra de la revolución, 1789-1815. (49 min.)
"Charles IV succeeded to the Spanish throne in 1788. One year later, the cataclysmic revolution in neighboring France dealt European monarchism a blow of seismic proportions. Focusing on Charles' reign--conducted with extreme passivity and ending in abdication--this program uses film clips, dramatizations, paintings, and architectural landmarks to examine a country caught in the throes of sociopolitical turmoil. Queen Maria Luisa and her lover Manuel de Godoy, the true royal powers, are spotlighted as Spain's fortunes in the shadow of Napoleonic France are appraised.."
Capítulo 19. Vivan las caenas! 1815-1840. (50 min.)
"Beginning with the Battle of Bailén, this program charts the erratic course of politics in Spain that saw Ferdinand VII deposed by Napoleon and replaced by the emperor's brother, Joseph; reinstated at the end of the Peninsular War by the victorious allied forces; constrained by a coup in 1820 to abide by the liberal constitution of 1812; and unbound by a second coup to resume his authoritarian reign -- an era known as the Decada Ominosa. Wars for independence in Spain's American possessions are also chronicled. Dramatizations and film clips capture the harshness of the period.
Disc 11:
Capítulo 20. Por la senda liberal, 1824-1850. (53 min.)
"With the Pragmatic Sanction, the Spanish rule passed to Ferdinand VII's young daughter, Isabella, upon his death-and touched off the Carlist Wars, with Ferdinand's brother Don Carlos pitting himself against Queen Regent Maria Cristina. This program employs dramatizations, artwork, maps, film clips, and footage of palaces and other landmarks to make sense of the complex political and social forces at work during the years of the First and Second Carlist Wars. Battles and reprisals as well as reforms and socioeconomic progress all have a place in this story of Spain's turn toward liberalismo."
Capítulo 21. Viva España con honra, 1851-1871 (46 min.)
"The reign of Isabella II was characterized by palace intrigues, antechamber influences, barracks conspiracies, and military pronunciamientos. This program illustrates the factionalist ferment that led to the Revolution of 1868, the expulsion of the queen, the regency of Francisco Serrano, and the short reign of Amadeus . Film clips, artwork, dramatizations, and maps shed light on the unrest at home and in Cuba as well as on moderate progress in public works and slight improvements in commerce and finance. The advantageous war against Morocco is also presented."
Disc 12:
Capítulo 22. El regreso de los Borbones, 1872-1893 (50 min.)
Beginning with the brief tenure of Amadeus I, continuing on through the short-lived First Republic, and concluding with the reign of Alfonso XII and the early years of Alfonso XIII, this program thoroughly acquaints viewers with the second Bourbon restoration. Using dramatizations, architectural landmarks, artwork, and film clips, it covers upsurges of regionalismo and cantonalismo, the Third Carlist War, Cuban separatism, socialism, ongoing industrialization, mass emigration, and work-and education-related social reforms."
Capítulo 23. Alfonso XIII, 1894-1921 (50 min.)
"After reprising key events from Alfonso XIII's early years--most notably the loss of Spain's remaining colonies in 1898--this program traces his reign up to the military debacle at Annual. Vintage film and dramatizations bring early-20th-century Spain to life as they document major challenges to Spanish monarchal rule: Catalan agitation for autonomy, the spread of socialism and anarchism, the execution of Francisco Ferrer Guardia, labor violence, and ongoing warfare in Morocco. Sociocultural aspects of the times, such as the literary Generation of '98, are also singled out."
Disc 13:
Capítulo 24. España, España, 1922-1939. (63 min.)
"The dictatorship of Miguel Primo de Rivera. Spain's Second Republic. The Spanish Civil War. This program, composed almost entirely of period footage and photographs, seeks to understand the tortuous sociopolitical forces at work in Spain between the two world wars. Profiles of public figures and popular movements combined with background on liberal reforms and horrific atrocities evoke an image of a people torn between hope and despair. "
Capítulo 25. Franco, Franco, Franco, 1940-1975(64 min.)
"For nearly 40 years, the totalitarian regime of Generalísmo Francisco Franco defined Spain. This program draws upon archival footage and photographs to show what life was like for Spaniards during that era: on the one hand, post-war economic hardships, curtailed civil liberties, and stringent governmental suppression, while on the other, widespread modernization and, following the Spanish Miracle, an improved standard of living. Franco's grooming of the future king, Juan Carlos, is also covered"
Disc 14:
Capítulo 26. España en libertad, 1976-2005. (61 min.)
"The coronation of Juan Carlos I marked the third restoration of Spanish Bourbon rule. This program tracks the mixed fortunes of post-Franco Spain as it transitioned into a parliamentary monarchy and moved foward into the 21st century. News footage of policy makers and events addresses free elections, economic restructuring, membership in the E.U., educational reforms, and social security as well as the failed 23-F coup, high unemployment, labor strikes, and terrorism"

|

|
| Plot: | During the Spanish Civil War, thousands of Spanish children were evacuated to other countries, around three thousand of them to the Soviet Union. Many of these children, now in their seventies, were never able to return home from what was intended to be a temporary evacuation.

The 400 Million. The Japanese aggression against China in 1937 forced the Chinese communists to join Chiang Kai-shek's Kwomintang to take up the battle against their common enemy. Filmed in 1938 and focusing on the battle of T'aiertshwang, this film shows all aspects of a war: the battle, the preparations, refugees, casualties and victims, the fear and distress, the human misery and the courage, and the land under fire.

| Plot: | The name of the Southern Spanish beach Tarifa evokes varied images - while for the European it is an ideal recreational centre, for Africans it is the gate to the longed for, affluent world, the attainment of which often means risking everything and setting oneself at the mercy of the cruel and indifferent sea and nights. It is estimated that around one thousand immigrants are drowned in the sea between Morocco and Spain yearly, the identity and motivation of whom are not of interest for many. How long, however, will this barrier, which protects the advanced world from reality, stay in place?
