CSC: MODELING THE USA POPULATION
This term we will model the population of the United States using
calculus. Using actual census data from the years 1790-1990 we will
model the data using various functions and compare the resulting fits.
We will also use analytic methods to solve the equations that arise.
After studying the models, we will attempt to estimate the
long range limiting size of the population.
Chapter 1: 1790-1850
Chapter 2: 1790-1990
Chapter 3: Solving the Differential
Equations
Chapter 4: The Verhulst Model
Chapter 5: 1950-1990 The
Logistic Curve

CHAPTER REPORTS
After exploring each of the CSC chapter worksheets above, students will compile their
results in a set of Chapter Reports. These reports will synthesize our efforts to
model the USA population using calculus. You can read a generic Chapter Report to
see their general structure, and you can download Chapter Report worksheets for each
chapter.

The CSC Chapter Reports are evaluated according to a
holistic grading scheme.
The same scheme is used for written exam questions. Math 3 students should be familiar
with these standards.
CSC ARCHIVE
Math 3 students have explored a wide range of topics during previous terms. Examples
of CSC's from earlier terms are available to browse and download in the
Archive Section.
