History
In 2002, Amy Noack, supported by the Schweitzer Community Service fellowship,
documented that there is a large underserved population in the Mascoma Valley,
particularly in Grafton, Canaan, and Enfield. She found that many of these
people drove to White River Junction, Vermont, to receive healthcare at the Good
Neighbor Health Clinic. This was a burden for them because of the length of the
drive. Working with Good Neighbor Health Clinic, she helped lay the foundation
to start a satellite clinic in the Mascoma Valley run by Dartmouth Medical
School students so that this population could be better served.
Ted Yuo, Ashley Miller, and John Raser took over this project
in 2003. Mascoma Valley Pediatrics, a medical practice in Canaan, volunteered
its space for the clinic, one evening per month. The chief resident in medicine
at DHMC volunteered his time to be the principle provider. Ted Yuo secured
$4,000 in grants from the United Way and Alpha Omega Alpha to initiate the
clinic. Since that time, Mascoma Clinic has continued to grow.
