20 Nov 2006: First Annual Mascoma Flu Shot Clinic

Armed with a box full of syringes and 160 doses of live flu virus, the Mascoma Clinic offered its first Flu Shot Clinic. The shots were administered by four intrepid DMS students (Dan Kaser, Jessica Morgan, James Town and Kristen Yurkerwich) and a local pediatrician, Dr. Bill Boyle. The Clinic took place in the same location as the bi-weekly Mascoma Clinics – in the generously borrowed office space of the Mascoma Pediatrics Group (the office of Dr. Boyle). We had advertised in the community through the inexhaustible efforts of Bob Asselin (lead recruiter, community representative, Good Neighbor Board Member and All-Around Good Soul) by putting up flyers and talking with local community members, organizations and church groups.
The Flu Shot Clinic took place for a few hours on the evening of November 20, an alternate off-week from the normal clinic. The flu shots were available without appointment and patients trickled in steadily throughout the night. In all, 15 shots were dispensed, not a bad effort for our first go at it. We hope to repeat this event in the future and continue to expand the services of the Mascoma Clinic; a CPR certification course is being planned for early 2007 – email us for more details.
