Alumni News The Arts and Sciences Graduate Alumni Association at Dartmouth (ASGAAD) presented its third annual poetry reading on Saturday, February 8, during Winter Carnival Weekend. This year, the celebration of poetry was held in the activity room at Wheelock Terrace, an assisted living facility in Hanover. The participants hoped to gain a new perspective by sharing they’re favorite poems and their own writing and by inviting the residents to do the same. The experience proved more moving and enriching than they had imagined. Claire Brown MALS ’97, Judy Chypre MALS ’99, Nancy Iott MALS ’92, and Nance Silliman ’95, MALS ’96 all read their work. The residents of Wheelock Terrace were joined by the friends and family of Barbara Wells, who had recently died after spending the last several years of her life at the facility. She was an accomplished poet, and everyone had a turn at reading her poems on nature, family, life, and aging. Another reading at Wheelock Terrace is being organized the spring. If you would like to learn more about this project, please contact Nance Silliman (603)646-3651. Alexander Hernandez-Siegel MALS ’99 is an Assistant Dean of Student Life and Advisor to Latino Students. His vision is to see more Latinos moving into leadership roles. He feels he can bring this about by helping students take advantage of the resources at Dartmouth to individually create the best possible experience here. He sees diversity as a mosaic, with too many pieces currently left out of what could be a beautiful whole. Alex earned his MALS degree while working at Dartmouth. He feels this was not only a very rewarding experience, but it also gave him a perspective on college life that he uses in his work.
