MALS Application Requirements

Applicants to the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies program at Dartmouth College are required to have a Bachelor's degree. Because of the strong academic program at Dartmouth, a student's motivation, maturity and ability to do intensive graduate work are central to acceptance. For candidates who have been out of college for a significant period of time, or who feel that their undergraduate performance does not accurately reflect their academic ability, it is useful to submit some evidence of your current academic aptitude. Transcripts of more recent coursework will be evaluated carefully.

The program welcomes applications from international candidates with demonstrated proficiency in English. Because facility in written and spoken English is of vital importance in the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies Program, all applicants for whom English is not their native language or who have not attended an English-speaking undergraduate institution must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

The Admissions evaluation emphasizes the candidate's articulation of his or her interests, the suitability of our curriculum to those interests, and the individual's ability to take initiative in designing a plan-of-study. We look at your record of achievement, your goals for the future, and how the M.A.L.S. Program at Dartmouth College will help you bridge them. Spend time familiarizing yourself with our courses, our requirements, our students, and our enrollment options, so that you can best articulate what this program offers you, and what you would contribute to the MALS community.

To Apply to the MALS Program:

Application deadlines:
For Summer & Fall Enrollment: February 15
For Winter & Spring Enrollment: July 15
(Students may enter the program at the beginning of any of Dartmouth's four terms [Summer, Fall, Winter & Spring Terms]. All terms are ten weeks in duration.)

• Complete and submit the online application form
• Accompany the application with a non-refundable fee of $50.00
• Attach the admissions essay to the completed application.  See Admission Essay Guidelines
• Have OFFICIAL transcripts of your undergraduate and graduate work sent directly to the MALS office at: MALS Program at Dartmouth College - 6092 Wentworth Hall - Hanover NH 03755  (ALL credit-bearing coursework MUST be documented by an OFFICIAL transcript).
• Have three letters of reference. Letters of reference may be uploaded directly to the online application or sent to the MALS office with this M.A.L.S. Reference Form
  
  • Letters of reference should be from the following categories:
    
    • academic (at least one academic reference required)
    • professional supervisor or administrator

• Students must enroll within the academic year of their admission, and all degree requirements must be satisfied within six years of program entry.
• All application materials become the property of Dartmouth College.
• An admissions interview IS REQUIRED for admission into the M.A.L.S. Program at Dartmouth College.
  • Where feasible, in-person interviews are preferred; alternately, you can schedule a Skype interview.
• The GRE IS NOT REQUIRED for admission into the M.A.L.S. Program at Dartmouth College.
