Dear MALS Students:

Anybody ready for spring?  This letter is a reminder of the steps involved in the on-line registration and check-in processes for spring term 2008. To avoid any confusion over the steps involved in on-line registration, PLEASE READ CAREFULLY, AND SAVE THIS LETTER.

*There are three (3) steps to the registration process, as follows:

STEP ONE    (Pre-Enrollment)

Please remember that completing this step of the process DOES NOT automatically register you for courses. For on-line course selection and registration, see step two.

By Tuesday, February 12, 2008 please complete the MALS Enrollment Plan Form. This form is available in the following three places.

The MALS web page http://www.dartmouth.edu/~mals/program/07-08%20Classes.html contains the list, and descriptions of courses to be offered in the summer term.

Please select ONE method of obtaining the form that is easiest for you.

If you open the form attached to the e-mail, or download it from our website, you will need to:

print it out,

fill it in, and

mail, fax (603-646-3590), or hand-deliver it to the MALS office at 116 Wentworth Hall.

Please Note:

Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to read the “PDF” file, but will not allow you to save your information. You should, however, print a hard copy for your records.

The information you provide on this form indicates whether you will be enrolled in the upcoming (fall) term. This enables us to plan for class sizes, and the Bursar’s office to activate your student account for billing purposes.  In other words, PLEASE provide this information NO LATER THAN Tuesday, February 12, 2008.

*For those students who are:

taking “off” one or more terms (leave term), or

who are pursuing thesis research on an independent, un-enrolled basis;

 complete step one ONLY.

*However, students registering for Thesis Research or an Independent Study are required to complete all three steps.

Please Note:

MALS students have the option of conducting thesis research and writing without being enrolled.  However, all students enrolling in thesis research MUST be in residence in the Hanover area, and sign a thesis research residence agreement.

STEP TWO   (Enrollment/Registration)

Beginning immediately; On-line course selection, through Banner Student www.dartmouth.edu/bannerstudent/

Although you have indicated (in step one) your preferences on the pre-enrollment form, you are still required to make your course selection on-line.  This step ensures your place in your classes, and should be completed by the dates indicated above.

If you are taking an undergraduate course as an elective, these courses require instructor permission. Please obtain an Elective Course Contract from the MALS office, fill it out and have it signed by the instructor well in advance of the deadline.

STEP THREE   (On-line CHECK-IN)

(March 24 through 26 Spring Check-In):

  • This is NOT course selection.
  • This is NOT registration.
  • This IS your signal to the college that you have arrived on campus and are prepared to accept the charges for the term. You will also update your personal information, i.e., address, phone #, etc.

*If you skip this step, your class enrollment/registration is NOT complete.*

Please go to Banner Student AGAIN and follow the check-in instructions. When you successfully complete the check-in process, you will be rewarded with a smiley faceJ.

*NEW STUDENTS:   YOU ARE REQUIRED TO COME INTO THE MALS OFFICE ON:                       Monday Morning, March 24th TO COMPLETE CHECK-IN.

As many of you know, accurate bills and class lists are dependent upon the information you provide to us – and the entire process depends upon all three steps being completed within the respective dates given. So PLEASE do your best to comply with all these instructions, cumbersome as they may seem.

On behalf of the MALS Office, good luck with your plans, and I look forward to seeing you in the spring.

Best regards,

Lauren E. Clarke
