Introduction to Cognitive Science

(Cognitive Science)

Instructor:   Adina Roskies, Philosophy

Schedule:  Tuesdays & Thursdays;  6:00 – 8:00 pm

Description:
This course will explore the central question in cognitive science:
What is the nature of mind and of mental representations?
Is the mind a computer? A physiological organ? A dynamical system? Are mental representations language-like or image-like?
In looking at these questions we will study approaches taken by a variety of disciplines, including linguistics, psychology, computer science, and philosophy, and will take a tour of the major insights into the nature of mind and methods for studying it that these fields have provided over the last several decades.
No prior experience with cognitive science or its subfields is required.

Clark, A.     Mindware: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Cognitive Science
Cummins, R. and D. Dellarosa Cummins, Eds.     Minds, Brains, and Computers
