Structure and Function of the Self

(Cognitive Science)

Instructor: Jay Hull
Jay.G.Hull@Dartmouth.EDU

Schedule:

Location:

Description:

This course will review current theory and research on the structure and function of the self.  Central issues include:

  • how individuals acquire and organize knowledge about themselves;
  • the role of others in shaping such self-knowledge;
  • the nature of self-esteem, its development, and its relation to behavior;
  • the potentially competing motivations of acting to enhance positive views of the self and acting in a manner consistent with one's (sometimes negative) views of oneself;
  • the nature of self-control — what it entails and why it often fails;
  • the influence of culture and gender on identity formation and the consequences of such identities for interpersonal relations; and finally
  • the interpersonal nature of self as expressed to others through self-disclosures and as presented to others in impression management.
