Description:
This course will review current theory and research on the structure and function of the self. Central issues include:
- how individuals acquire and organize knowledge about themselves;
- the role of others in shaping such self-knowledge;
- the nature of self-esteem, its development, and its relation to behavior;
- the potentially competing motivations of acting to enhance positive views of the self and acting in a manner consistent with one's (sometimes negative) views of oneself;
- the nature of self-control — what it entails and why it often fails;
- the influence of culture and gender on identity formation and the consequences of such identities for interpersonal relations; and finally
- the interpersonal nature of self as expressed to others through self-disclosures and as presented to others in impression management.
