SPORTS JOURNALISM IN THEORY AND PRACTICE
(Cultural Studies)

Description:Through reading, writing and discussion, students will be exposed to a range of sports writing.  Course work will be geared to understanding and practicing sports journalism: the differing demands of the genre and the special skills required for the writing and editing of books, articles, and news and feature stories. Discussion will focus on the historical evolution, ethical problems, contemporary issues and trends of sports journalism. Guidance will be provided in selecting and researching topics, preparing for and conducting interviews, and creating  a final work aimed at publication.  Weekly writing submissions will be reviewed by other students and the professor. Students will be required to meet and/or consult via e-mail or telephone with the professor on a sustaining basis outside of regular class hours.

Course Requirements:

Timely and thorough readings of assigned works.
Informed participation in class discussion on readings (books must be brought to class for pinpoint reference and sample readings).
Submission of the Final Project  (25-35 pages).
Panel participation based on an aspect of sports journalism.
Grades will be based on the quality of work in all of the above.
Additionally, prompt attendance is required at all class sessions as are one-on-one meetings with the professor on a (minimum) bi-weekly basis. Hours will be held every Friday from 1-4  in 14 Sanborn.
