With the completion of Our Savior Lutheran Church and Campus Ministry’s renovations and the addition of the education wing in 2003, our ministry with children has a permanent home.
Our well-equipped Nursery is professionally staffed on Sundays. Parents may bring their infant and preschool children to the Nursery during the first part of the worship service and gather them up again to join the community when we receive Holy Communion. The audio of the service is piped into the Nursery, so it is not isolated from the worship the rest of what the community is offering.
During the academic year, children K-6 are invited to leave worship after the Prayer of the Day for Children’s Church, returning for Holy Communion. This is a single classroom lesson for a range of ages that accommodates both regular attenders and visitors, utilizing a variable curriculum drawn from Augsburg Fortress materials and other sources such as Godly Play.
At worship children often help the ushers, are involved in a particular aspect of the worship, or gather to hear a Message for All of God’s Children. They are invited to come forward for a blessing if they are not yet receiving Holy Communion. Communion instruction is given in Grade 4, and First Communions are often celebrated at that time, although children may receive the bread and cup at a younger age with the permission of their parents.
Catechism instruction for Grades 7-8, led by the pastors, occurs on Wednesday afternoons during the academic year. It always includes a weekend with other Catechumens at Camp Calumet in the spring. Children of the congregation, grades 5-12, often attend one or two of the Calumet weeks over the summer, many assisted by our Calumet Camperships.
