Cana Hall Conversation: A Common Word

h1 Tuesday, February 19th, 2008 at 9:24 am

The Lutheran Campus Ministry of Our Savior Lutheran Church and the Al-Nur Student Organization at Dartmouth College will sponsor an event at noon this Sunday, February 24th, 2008 at Our Savior in response to “A Common Word Between Us and You”, an October 2007 statement by 138 Muslim scholars declaring the common ground between Islam and Christianity.

David L. Coolidge, advisor to Al-Nur, will be the featured speaker at Our Savior’s February “Cana Hall Conversation”, with responses from Muslim and Christian students and other participants.

“Christians and Muslims don’t know much about each other,” states Paul Batalden, Dartmouth Medical School faculty member and leader of a study group at Our Savior that has concentrated on understanding Islam.  “Many invitations are issued in today’s world to notice our differences.  Yet others have noticed that we share some common roots and each of us professes belief in one God and that our religious faith matters to us as we try to live.  We face many common challenges: we both live on the same planet with the same ecologic stresses; we both want to care for our children and grandchildren, our elderly and those who are ill or handicapped; we both want to earn a living to support ourselves and our families and we both need peace to live well.”

This Cana Hall Conversation, from noon to 1:30 including a light lunch, will begin to consider the implications of “A Common Word” for this community.  Our Savior Lutheran Church is located at 5 Summer St., Hanover (643-3703).
