Dear Editor,
For the past four years, Our Savior Lutheran Church in Hanover has sponsored four all-day quilting sessions each year to make disaster relief quilts – called quilt marathons. Community members have joined members of our church to make an average of 115 quilts a year! All from donated fabric and volunteer time.
This year, we received large donations of wonderful fabric – now, we need workers to make quilts to provide warmth to desperate people all around the world.
We are sponsoring four quilt marathons again this year from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 5 Summer Street in Hanover: October 30, 2008, and January 22, February 19, and March 19, 2009. In 2007, Lutheran World Relief distributed 452,870 quilts to people in 23 countries; 19,000 went to the country of Georgia alone – and in September 2008, 10,000 more went to the country of Georgia. Our quilts have gone to help victims of the tsunami in Southeast Asia, earthquakes in Pakistan/India, mudslides in Guatemala, and war in Darfur and Iraq.
People often say that they want to help others in dire circumstances, fleeing genocide and wars, and losing everything to floods, earthquakes and famines. Then they think – there’s really nothing I can do. Well, here is a very definite way you can help.
No experience and no supplies are necessary. Just come. People work as long as they can, an hour or two or more. They cut fabric into blocks, machine sew the blocks into tops, fit the tops to backs and fillers, tie quilts, and sew bindings on. We have some sewing machines, and people bring their own as well. Meals and snacks are provided.
Join us at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 5 Summer Street, Hanover, NH, on Thursday, October 30, 2008, any time between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. We’ll announce the 2009 marathons again after the holidays.
