Hello friends in the Dartmouth Linguistics Program,
I was recently reminded of how much fun I had in linguistics classes back in Hanover and then it occurred to me how little contact I've had with Dartmouth since I started graduate school. Right now I'm finishing up my second year of grad school at UC Berkeley. I have found a nice niche in the department and I love the S.F. Bay Area, so my decision to pursue linguistics at the graduate level has really taken me in a good direction. I've found more interests within the field of linguistics than I have time to pursue, but here are a few highlights of my linguistic life:
I've found myself generally drawn to syntactic, morphological, and historical topics. I'm currently finishing up the masters (i.e. mostly coursework) portion of my graduate program, but I am looking forward to spending more time on my own research projects next year. Not surprisingly, I've become more and more interested in California languages since coming here, and I'm currently engaged in fieldwork on Southeastern Pomo with a number of my Berkeley peers. On top of schoolwork and earning my keep as a Graduate Student Instructor, I also helped to organize the 33rd meeting of the Berkeley Linguistics Society and I'm on the organizing committee for the upcoming West Coast Conference on Formal Linguistics. I'm looking forward to having a little more free time this summer!
