I graduated in 1978 with a special major in linguistics. Hoyt Alverson was my advisor, and he taught my first course in linguistics. Later on I got an MA in theoretical linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin. Then I worked in machine translation, then taught ESL for a couple of years. Now I work as an editor at Cambridge University Press in New York, publishing textbooks for non-native speakers of English who are studying the language.
