Borrow Direct Services

Borrow Direct allows faculty, students and staff at Dartmouth College to directly request books from the combined library catalogs of Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University, and Yale University.

Who may use Borrow Direct?

  • All current Dartmouth faculty, students, and staff with active e-mail accounts; all current DHMC/Lebanon-based DMS faculty, physicians, and residents with active e-mail accounts, are eligible to use the service.

How does Borrow Direct work?

  • Log in to Borrow Direct

    Patron ID in Borrow Direct for Dartmouth College faculty, students and staff is by Dartmouth ID number (DID#). Eligible users at DHMC, including physicians, residents, and staff with DMS faculty appointments, Patron ID is the barcode number on the back of the DHMC ID. (Note: DHMC users may obtain a barcode number by registering at the Matthews-Fuller Library at DHMC).

  • Use the search facility to locate the book you wish to borrow.
  • Designate your library pick-up location.
  • Click the REQUEST button, verify your name, and enter your e-mail address.
  • You will immediately receive an e-mail confirming your request. Additional e-mails will be sent advising you of the progress of your order through the receipt and availability of the item.

What can be requested through Borrow Direct?

  • Books not owned by the Dartmouth College Library.
  • Library books that are currently unavailable, i.e. charged out, missing, at the bindery, etc.
  • Books that normally circulate from our partners' collections.

What cannot be requested through Borrow Direct?

  • Books currently AVAILABLE in the library catalog.
  • Journals, magazines, newspapers and other serial publications.
  • Photocopies.
  • Non-circulating books, e.g. Reference books, rare books, etc.; Non-book formats, e.g. microforms, video or musical recordings, etc.

When will the book arrive?

  • Most items will be available for pick-up at your designated location within 4 working days of the date you placed the request.

What is the loan period for Borrow Direct books?

  • Usually 42 days.
  • All items are subject to recall by the owning library.
  • Renewals are not available at this time.

Where are books returned?

  • Return material by the due date or if requested by the Borrow Direct staff.
  • Return Borrow Direct material to any of the designated pick-up libraries on campus.
