Video/Audio Editing:
The Media Center provides access to editing workstations on a drop-in basis for periods of up to three hours at a time. Workstations may be renewed depending on availability. The workstations are equipped for video/audio editing and allow patrons to capture video and audio from a variety of source media types: miniDV, VHS, DVD, DVCam, Hi8, LaserDisc, BetaCam and audio cassette tape. Note: Jones Media Center equipment may not be used for duplicating copyrighted materials. See the Dartmouth College copyright policy for more information.
The following Macintosh computers are currently installed:
- iMac - Intel (9)
- Dual-core Intel Mac Pro (8)
The following software is available on the editing stations:
- Video: iMovie 6, iDVD 6, FinalCut Express, QuickTime Pro, VisualHub
- Audio: iTunes, GarageBand, Soundtrack, Audacity, AudialHub
- Graphics: iPhoto and Adobe Creative Suite 3 (Acrobat Pro, Adobe Bridge, Dreamweaver, Flash, Indesign, Illustrator, Photoshop)
Scanning:
Three editing stations have flatbed color scanners: (1) Epson Expression 1680 and (2) Epson Perfection v500 Photo. One of these stations is also equipped with a slide/35mm film scanner (Nikon Super Coolscan 5000ED). Slide/film scanner tutorial.
Other In-House Equipment:
- Hard Drives
LaCie firewire hard drives are available to patrons working on video editing projects. Hard drives may be signed out for up to 7 days (in-house use only). More information about our hard drives.
- Microphones
To record live sound (voice over), two devices are available for in-house use: Plantronics USB Headset Mic and the Logitech USB Desktop Mic. Guide to voice recording.
- USB Flash Drives
USB Flash drives (4 GB) can be used in-house to allow for temporary file storage or easy data transfer between computers.
- MIDI Keyboard
For advanced audio projects, Jones Media Center has a MIDI keyboard for in-house use available.
- Memory Card Reader/Writer
Our SanDisk ImageMate 8 accepts the following flash memory types: Compact Flash Type/Memory Stick/Smart Media/xD Picture Card/SD/MultiMedia Card.
- Floppy Disc & Iomega Zip Drives
Need to recover old data? We have a 250MB Zip drive with USB interface and a VST iMac USB floppy drive that reads and writes standard 1.44 MB floppy discs.
