What is LibX

LibX is a browser toolbar that provides quick searching of the Dartmouth College Library Catalog, the Howe Library Catalog, Worldcat, Search360, Google Books, Amazon Books and Google Scholar. Highlight text on a Web site and right-click (or ctrl-click with a one button mouse) to search the highlighted text in the Dartmouth College Library Catalog or Google Scholar. Standard numbers like ISBN's, ISSN's, Crossref DOI's and PubMed ID's are automatically hyperlinked to Dartmouth licensed resources. Look for the image and click on it to check Dartmouth holdings and go directly to the fulltext of articles when available.

To use Search360 from LibX requires your computer to have a Dartmouth IP address. Read how to access the Dartmouth College Library from Off-Campus for more information.

LibX Features

  • Toolbar: Direct access to the Dartmouth College Library Catalog via a toolbar - automatic construction of simple or advanced searches. Search by entering terms or select and drag-and-drop into the search box.

**Use multiple search boxes when searching the Dartmouth College Library Catalog by clicking on the down arrow . Worldcat, Search360, Google and Amazon will search the terms in the first search box but ignore the terms in added search boxes.
  • Right-click context menu: The right-click context menu is now configurable. The default settings when selecting text are keyword, title, author searches in the Dartmouth College Libary Catalog and keyword in Google Scholar. ISBN/ISSN's when selected search the Dartmouth College Library Catalog as an ISSN or ISBN search. DOI's and PMID's go to Article Linker.

Search the Dartmouth College Library Catalog or Google Scholar via a right-click menu. Select terms and right-click (or ctrl-click on a one button mouse) to choose how to search.

The right-click menu changes automatically depending on what is selected. For instance, if an ISBN is selected, the right-click menu will offer the option to search directly using that standard number. Currently recognized standard numbers are CrossRef DOIs, ISBNs, and ISSNs, and PubMed IDs.
  • Google Scholar Support: Highlight text and either drag-and-drop onto the Scholar button in the LibX toolbar or right-click (ctrl-click for a one button mouse) and use the context menu to search for the selected text in Google Scholar. When highlighting a paper title LibX will read Google Scholar's results to determine whether the paper was found and provide a link to the fulltext when available. Use this feature even from inside a PDF, which makes retrieving papers referenced in a PDF file a snap.
  • Embedded Cues: LibX places cues in web pages for resources referenced on that page. Click on the cue to look at what the library has. For instance, book pages at Amazon contain cues that can check whether the library has the book. Other pages that contain cues are Google, Yahoo! Search, the NY Times Book Review, and others.

    From Amazon:
  • Autolinking: Based on Jesse Ruderman's autolinking script, LibX automatically links ISBNs, ISSNs, Crossref DOIs, and other standard numbers to the Dartmouth College Library Catalog or, when an article, to the fulltext.

    from Google Books:

A book title can have different ISBNs for the paperback, the hardcover, even for different editions. LibX supports OCLC's xISBN service; Clicking on an "autolinked" ISBN will search the Dartmouth College Library Catalog for the item and will also provide other related ISBNs that the library may have.

Apple MAC users make sure that "library.dartmouth.edu" has been added as an authorized site to install software, and you may need to uncheck the "warn me when web sites try to install extensions or themes" box.

Bugs

  • The Dartmouth College Library Catalog is the only resource which can use multiple search boxes added by clicking on the down arrow . The others will search the terms in the first search box but ignore the terms in added search boxes.
