Edward P. Sine, Class of 1951, was the donor of approximately 3,000 original watercolors and drawings by noted British illustrators and 6,000 books illustrated by them, about them, or referring to them; as well as related materials. Mr. Sine bequeathed his collection to Dartmouth in honor of Herbert Faulkner West, professor of comparative literature from 1922 to 1964. The 1993 gift, which is available for use by both professional and lay researchers, includes:
• Approximately 2,000 original illustrations by the Brock brothers, Charles E., Henry M., Richard H., and Thomas, and their cousin Fred Pegram, as well as 3,000-4,000 books illustrated by or concerning them; and related materials. The Brocks worked, collectively, from the 1890s through about the first third of this century. Charles and Henry, the oldest of the brothers, were also the best known, for illustrations of period books by authors including Jane Austen, Charles Lamb, Oliver Goldsmith, Daniel Defoe and Sir Walter Scott. Henry was also know for his illustrations of school stories.
• Approximately 200 original illustrations by Hugh Thomson and as many as 1,000 books illustrated by him, about him or referring to him; and related materials. Thomson flourished as an illustrator between the 1880s and World War I, and was particularly well known for depictions of London life and the poor of the city. His work preceded and influenced that of the Brocks.
• More than 100 drawings by noted British illustrators who worked during the period after 1885, including F.H. Townsend, Chris Hammond, Edmund J. Sullivan, Mary V. Wheelhouse, W. Heath Robinson, Arthur Rackham, Ernest H. Shepherd and Harry Furniss.
• As many as 100 books providing examples of special bindings from the 1890s through the early 20th century; including "Chivers vellucent," embossed leather, and "Kelliegram" leather with pictorial onlays.
