The Book Arts Prize is a juried award given every year in recognition of excellence in the creation of a hand printed and bound book, letterpress printing, or hand binding made in the studio of the Book Arts Workshop. Prizes will be awarded in the following categories:
The Grand Prize of $500 will be awarded to the undergraduate who combines letterpress printing and hand bookbinding to create an original book. The book should be printed in the Letterpress Studio and bound in the Open Bindery.
An award of $150 will be given for the best example of letterpress printing created and produced in the Letterpress Studio by a Dartmouth College student (undergraduate or graduate). Submissions may be a single broadside (minimum dimensions 14” x 17”) or a collection of at least 3 printed items, either related thematically or unrelated.
An award of $150 will be given for the best example of a book hand bound in the Open Bindery by a Dartmouth College student (undergraduate or graduate). The book may contain blank, letterpress, or pre-printed pages. The text will be judged only in how the content relates to the binding and materials selected.
The contest is limited to undergraduate and graduate students of Dartmouth College and the entry must have been completed no earlier than June 1, 2008. Prize winners must have distributed their type before any prize will be awarded.
Entries are due by 4pm, Friday, June 12, 2009. Bring entries to Preservation Services in Berry Library, Rm. 88. Submission forms are available in the Book Arts Workshop.
