Letterpress Workshop Schedule - Spring 2012

**Registered for a workshop but can't attend? Please email us to cancel your registration.**

Letterpress Orientation

The Letterpress workshop requires an introductory orientation session for all newcomers to learn the basics of typesetting and press work. Each session will begin with a brief discussion of the history and process of Letterpress printing. After a tour of the workshop participants will set a short poem in type that will be printed on a Vandercook press. Emphasis will be placed on the proper techniques of setting hand type, press work and the selection of appropriate type faces. No previous experience is required and all materials and equipment are provided. Be sure to bring a short poem of no more than 10 to 14 lines that you would like to print.

The introductory sessions are offered on select Monday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 9:00 pm in Baker Library, room 23, and led by book arts instructor, Robert Metzler. Registration is required and limited to six participants. Dartmouth students will receive priority.

Classes will meet two times for each session.

Letterpress Intensive - What Makes Great Typography Great

"...what makes great typography great." - Steve Jobs

I learned about serif and sans serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can't capture, and I found it fascinating.
- 2005 Stanford commencement address

Learn the fundamentals of making "insanely" great typography. The Letterpress Studio at Baker Library is offering to the Dartmouth community an opportunity to learn about traditional book arts through the printing of a chapbook of poetry.

A ten-evening series of intensive instruction is planned to provide an in-depth experience in the technical nuances and creative aspects of fine letterpress printing. The sessions will cover hand-setting and proofing of metal type; typographic design and layout of covers and text pages; and final printing and binding of a limited number of copies of the chapbook. Each participant will have the opportunity to consider several choices of poetry from the public domain for his or her own book, including small collections of short poems or excerpts from longer works.

Sessions will be held on Wednesdays from 6 to 9 pm in Baker Library, rooms 21 and 23, from March 28 through May 30, and will be led by Won Chung. Materials and equipment will be provided without charge by the Workshop.

Registration is required and will be limited to only six participants. Dartmouth undergraduates and previous Letterpress Intensive participants will receive priority. Those interested in more information or in signing up should email Won.K.Chung@Dartmouth.edu and mention any relevant graphic arts experience.

Letterpress Special Sessions

Two special sessions will be held this term to explore 1) legibility and appropriateness in type faces and 2) graduation announcements. Registration for each session is mandatory; please follow the links to register.

Type is nothing at all when it is not easy to read. We will explore the legibility and appropriate use of type found in the Book Arts Workshop. Bring a short poem or quotation to be set and proofed in several different type faces after which we will compare and decide which faces are the most legible and appropriate for the piece. Those faces selected will be printed and assembled into a portfolio for each of the participants.

Previous experience in type setting or completion of a letterpress orientation class is required.

So, you are finally graduating this year. Why not print your announcement with your own personal touch while learning to print it letterpress? We will concentrate on the design, selection of appropriate type faces, color of ink, and kind of paper to be used.

Previous experience in type setting or completion of a letterpress orientation class is required.

Letterpress Open Studios

Open Studio sessions for those with experience in letterpress printing will be available from 6:30 to 9 pm on Tuesday evenings. Open Studio sessions are instructor-supervised hours set aside in the letterpress workshop for experienced letterpress printers to work on their own projects. Anyone wishing to use the letterpress workshop during Open Studio must have previously attended an introductory orientation session. Open Studio sessions are limited to six participants and require registration.

Each letterpress open studio session will also have a brief instruction and demonstration of a variety of letterpress topics. Topics for each session are listed below.
