Preservation Services staff prepare items for commercial binding by examining the leaf attachment or original method of binding. Staff input author and title information into a vendor-provided database (ABLE) and request a specific method of binding, cover material, and spine stamping color. That information is sent along with the volumes once a month to our commercial binder The HFGroup.
The commercial binding budget for Arts & Sciences was substantially cut in FY10, FY11, and FY12. Due to these budget reductions, Preservation Services is conducting a review of the established criteria for selecting serials to bind. Serial titles comprise the majority of commercially bound items, and the increase in electronic publication of serials has changed the way these collections are used and preserved. Our goal in this assessment is to create a comprehensive serials binding policy that will re-allocate commercial binding resources to the most vulnerable materials in the collection. To learn more about the assessment and its anticipated outcomes, please see the Print Serials Processing documentation on the PACC website (restricted to Dartmouth College Library staff).
